Watermarks Can Be Music To Your Ears

When somebody uses your works without permission, if you've registered those works with the copyright office you can get "statutory damages" -- up to $25,000 per use, in addition to the actual damages caused to you by the use. But registering costs money. Turns out that, just by putting a watermark on your photo, you can get a similar level of protection. Given the regular use of photos from this site and my smugmug site by people who aren't me, maybe I should consider adding watermarks!

Hello Wade. How can you track people using your images?

My Web host keeps good logs of who's seen my site, and these logs include the referer (yes, that's spelled correctly). I can start to find out who's linking to me, or using my images, that way. I also look at whether or not certain images are accessed disproportionately frequently and can google for the image url if there's something that's really out of whack.
