Blog It: Connecting Social Networks and MT

A Facebook app that lets me syndicate my post to Facebook, if I post from within Facebook. Unfortunately forces me to give up a number of features I use regularly, and it looks like there’s no easy way to convert my set-up to use it. Might be if I upgrade to MT 4, tho, which seems more desirable now that Action Streams is out too.

Presenting Movable Type 4.0

“This is the biggest release of MT ever, a complete redesign of both the front end information architecture and the back end scaling infrastructure.” Phew. I don’t think I’m up for an upgrade right now.

CrossBlog on Movable Type 3.2

“If you want to post an entry from one Movable Type blog to another - it is like posting on two blogs in one shot - even if they are on two different servers, use the CrossBlog plugin… Nevertheless, the author of CrossBlog warns you about some potential incompatibility issues with later versions of MT such as 3.2… To save you part of the trouble, here are some necessary tweaks to make CrossBlog successfully work on MT 3.2.”

Fixing Movable Type's non-permanent permalinks

Movable Type’s export function is broken — it doesn’t preserve permalinks. I got around this in my last migration by exporting the whole MySQL database that provides the back-end for this site, which created a very large export file. Using this small hack might be easier.

NaughtyWordChars

“NaughtyWordChars is a plugin to strip malformed characters out of posts pasted in from Microsoft Word documents.” Replaces them with either the ASCII equivalent or appropriate character entity. Also works on text pasted from… well, just about anywhere.

Trackback is dead

Absolutely true. Trackback was designed as a way that others could automatically post a note on an entry in your blog if they made an entry in their blog that referenced your entry. About a year ago I started getting tons of Trackback spam; I eventually was forced to turn off access to Trackback (using .htaccess) to stop the over 50 spams I was getting per day (and 0-1 legitimate Trackbacks). It’s sad, another service killed by spammers.

MOVABLE TYPE 3.16 - KNOWN ISSUES

“It is impossible to create two categories with the same name, even if they have different parents (on MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite).” Aha, that explains that. Well, hopefully they’ll fix this bug (or I’ll figure out a clever way to work around it… maybe blog-distinct naming conventions?).

MyBlogLog

“Wouldn’t it be great to know what content your readers like the most? MyBlogLog enables you to track when outgoing links are clicked by your visitors.” Sounds like a great tool, although I would imagine that they harvest the information of who clicks on what links. (Not just a Movable Type thing, for any site.)

SharpMT

“I tried a few different tools out there that promised exactly that: offline authoring. However, most of these applications were written with the most generic set of blog fields possible, to support the largest number of blogging servers possible. I use MT and I needed all of the fields that MT specifically offers, so these existing tools didn’t work for me. Also, I found that when I wanted to link new entries to existing entries, I had to go online and dig through my old posts to find the article link, which was painful at times. And so I started SharpMT.”

Comment Spam Load Threatens MT Installations; Update Forthcoming

Much of the MT 3 redesign was put out there to stop comment spam. But a soon-to-be-fixed bug may have made comment spam as much as, or more of, a problem than before. A fix is in test already.
